High Above

Blessed be the name of the Lord from this time forth and forevermore! From the rising of the sun to its setting, the name of the Lord is to be praised! The Lord is high above all nations, and his glory above the heavens! Who is like the Lord our God, who is seated on high, who looks far down on the heavens and the earth?” “Praise the Lord from the earth, you great sea creatures and all deeps, fire and hail, snow and mist, stormy wind fulfilling his word! Mountains and all hills, fruit trees and all cedars! Beasts and all livestock, creeping things and flying birds! Kings of the earth and all peoples, princes and all rulers of the earth! Young men and maidens together, old men and children! Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven.” Psalm 113:2-6; 148:7-13

Who flecks the black expanse with white twinkling stars? Who smudges pink streaks across the end-of-night sky to announce the coming day? Who in silence shouts His glory so all who would look at the heavens, and watch, and wait, can hear? Whose majesty and power are limitless and cannot be contained? Who reigns high above the heavens, and rules over them and earth and all living things and the affairs of man and every lowly human heart? The God of gods, King of kings, and Lord of lords! The Friend of sinners and Lover of our souls! The Ruler of the universe Who condescends to show mercy and grace to His people! (1 Kings 8:27; Psalm 8:3-4; 19:1-2; 136:2-3; Matthew 11:19; Revelation 19:16)

He is the merciful God Who stoops to lift us up. “For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly.” His perfect eye beholds His creation and looks in compassion on all He has made. He watches us muddle in the lowlands, wandering like sheep without a shepherd, consumed with the world and blind, deaf, and lame to His glories. But He does not abandon us. He does not leave us in these waste places. In lavish grace He lifts us up to see His glorious majesty in a new, supernatural dimension of life. He forgives our sin, heals our infirmities, broadens our possibilities, and sets before us a higher way, a highway of holiness. He imparts spiritual wisdom to open our eyes to His heavenly work. He gives lasting meaning to our days in His divine purposes, and His Spirit awakens in us holy passion to know Him. (Psalm 18:35; 103:3-4; 138:6; Isaiah 35:2,5-6,8; Mark 6:34)

What will it take to begin and reside each day in the heights with Him, far above what so easily entangles us, and all our energy and senses, here below?

“I’m pressing on the upward way,
New heights I’m gaining every day;
Still praying as I onward bound,
‘Lord, plant my feet on higher ground.'”  ~Johnson Atman, Jr. (1856-1926)

Transcendent LORD, Holy Highness, I want to breathe Your air. Please heighten the quality of the way I love and live, and elevate my thinking, that I may know You better and lift high Your praises forever. (Exodus 33:13,18)
